Also known as laughter lines or more scientifically, nasolabial folds, these tiny expression wrinkles sit around the mouth and the eyes and typically worsen as we age. Although they might be associated with happiness and laughter, they can also be a sign of ageing.

What are Smile Lines?

Smile lines are usually seen around the sides of the mouth as well as around the eyes, and they often give away how we’re feeling. Typically, when we’re expressing our emotions, such as when we’re happy, smiling or laughing, these lines become visible. As we age however, these lines can become more prominent and over time, they may be visible even when we aren’t smiling. Folds in the skin which run from the side of your nose to the corners of your mouth, may also become more permanent.

Smile lines are caused by a loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, which leads to a loss of elasticity, reducing skin’s ability to ‘bounce back’.

Ageing does play a huge part in smile lines as our bone structure can change over time causing folds and lines to appear, plus a loss of volume in our cheeks can contribute to the deepening of these lines too. As well as ageing, excess sun exposure and smoking can also kill off collagen and elastin whilst dehydrating skin, causing lines to become more prominent at a younger age.

TREATMENTS FOR SMILE LINES
