Everyone loses a certain number of hairs per day, up to 100 in fact. But if you’re noticing excessive hair loss and bald patches, it can be distressing.
Hair loss doesn’t just occur on the scalp; it can occur anywhere on the body and it isn’t always permanent.

There are many reasons behind hair loss however the most common cause is hereditary and is often known as either male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness. Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during pregnancy and menopause can also trigger hair loss as can various medical conditions such as diabetes, medications and chemotherapy, which can cause hair loss as a side effect. Another big trigger behind hair loss is stress, particularly long term stress. When the stress hormone cortisol is released, the normal hair growth cycle is disturbed as cortisol pushes hairs into a resting phase, in which they don’t grow. On top of this, nutritional deficiencies and certain hairstyles, such as tight ponytails, can also trigger hair loss.

Although anyone can experience hair loss, it does become more common with age and if it runs in your family, it’s likely you may experience it too. If you’re taking certain medications such as those used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout, and high blood pressure, then hair loss could also come as a side effect.
