Additional information

What is Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP) for Hair Loss?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) uses a portion of your own blood as a treatment to improve the blood supply and health of your hair follicles. A small sample of your own blood is taken and centrifuged to isolate the platelets-rich-plasma element of the blood. After a topical numbing cream is applied to the plasma is re-injected into the scalp where there has been hair loss. It uses the body’s own regenerative chemicals or growth factors and no artificial chemicals or toxins are used.

How does Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP) for Hair Loss work?

PRP uses the platelet-rich-plasma of your blood which is separated in a centrifuge then reinjected into the desired area, the remainder of the sample of platelet-poor plasma will then be spread on the scalp to seal any injection points. The regenerative and healing molecules in the plasma trigger causes the platelets to activate and release a large quantity of growth factors that are then thought to stimulate the hair follicles to start producing thicker, stronger hair again.

What are the benefits?

This treatment stimulates dormant and active follicles to start producing thicker, stronger hair again and is an effective alternative or adjunct to hair transplant surgery for men and women. It delivers generally impressive results, with some studies showing between 20-60% increase in thickness and cover of hair in areas treated over the course of a year following the treatment. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30606055/

What areas can be treated?

PRP can also be used for skin rejuvenation for the face and neck as well as for encouraging hair growth.

Can it be used with other treatments?

PRP can be used in combination with Nucleofill Hair, an injectable treatment that may enhance hair growth.

What is the downtime?

There is very little downtime with PRP though some redness post treatment is normal. We recommend to not wash your hair until the following day to allow the plasma to seep into the injection points and be fully absorbed by the scalp.

Where is this treatment available?

This is offered in London, in our Harley Street, Belgravia, City and Liberty clinics, and our Edinburgh clinic

FAQS

Can I have PRP with other injectables in the same appointment?

Yes - we frequently do treatments where PRP is combined with other injectables, such as Nucleofill Hair

Can I have additional PRP treatments if I see an improvement?

Yes, since PRP is an entirely natural treatment using components of your own blood, there is no limit to the number of treatments that can be performed. We usually advise waiting for 6 months' after the initial treatment course to see improvements, and further treatments are perfectly safe.

When can I wash my hair after having PRP to my scalp?

We usually advise that hair washing should be avoided until the following day post-treatment

Can I exercise after having PRP?

Yes - although this may cause an increased risk of swelling so we'd advise avoiding strenuous exercise directly after the treatment.

Can I have PRP if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Yes - PRP treatments are safe to have if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, provided you do not have pregnancy-induced anaemia.

Are there any people who PRP is not suitable for?

Yes - unfortunately we cannot offer PRP treatments to patients undergoing treatments for cancers, particularly if a cancer has spread in the blood to other sites (metastases) to avoid the risk seeding of any cancer cells to injected areas. If you are in remission post-cancer treatment then PRP is safe to have.
