Arm fat, excess fat in the upper arms, can look flabby or loose and usually lacks muscle definition.

Anyone who is overweight is more likely to have excess arm fat, but individuals of average weight can have excess arm fat too. Hormonal imbalances can lead to stubborn arm fat, particularly in women going through hormonal fluctuations such as those that occur during menopause or pregnancy. Imbalances in the hormones oestrogen and testosterone, two important hormones involved in fat storage, can cause fat to be stored in the arms.

Age can also be a factor as metabolism tends to slow down with age, which can lead to weight gain. A slower metabolism also makes arm fat harder to get rid of. Arm fat can be influenced by genetics too as genes may dictate where fat is stored on the body and can also impact how hard or how easy it is to get rid of fat.

Other causes of arm fat include a sedentary lifestyle that lacks exercise, as well as a diet high in calories, particularly calories that come from processed, sugary foods as well as foods high in saturated fats. If you regularly eat a diet filled with non-nutritious, unhealthy foods, whilst also doing minimal exercise and movement then you may be more susceptible to fat in the arms.
