Smokers’ Lip Lines are the vertical creases or wrinkles which can develop around the lips. As the name suggests, these are particularly common in smokers due to the repetitive puckering motion of the lips when smoking.

Smoking itself is associated with ageing skin, and the tobacco in cigarettes is skin’s worst nightmare as it contributes to the breakdown of elastin and collagen, two structural proteins which help to keep skin firm. As levels of elastin and collagen break down, lines are more likely to develop. Plus, tobacco smoke is filled with harmful, skin-ageing chemicals which can cause damage to skin cells, further accelerating the ageing process. Other factors that can contribute to smokers’ lip lines include dehydration and excess sun exposure, as ultraviolet light breaks down collagen and elastin, leading to lines and creases.

Long-term smokers are the most susceptible to smokers’ lip lines. Genetics does come into it too, however smoking really is the predominant cause of smokers’ lip lines.
