What is Acne Scarring?

Acne scarring remains a complex condition, causing structural damage to the deeper layers of tissue and leading to long term changes to the skin. Once inflamed breakouts have healed, acne scarring and texture changes develop in several different forms, from indentations, such as keloids, rolling scars and hypertrophic scars, to raised areas such as atrophic, boxcar and ice pick scars.

Whilst appearing in slightly different forms, this scarring impact is caused by the release in inflammatory molecules, namely cytokines and enzymes, which harm collagen and elastin fibres whilst targeting bacteria. Dependent on the whether too much or too little collagen is produced in the skin during the healing process, the affected skin forms either depressions or raised scars, which can be challenging to treat due to their depth into the dermis.

Once scarring has formed, several factors such as genetics, age and the level of inflammation can impact their appearance and severity. 03Subcision

Our subcision treatment is particularly effective in individually treating deep pitted acne scars, performed with a thin needle that is directed towards dermis layer of the skin to release scar bands, cutting through scar tissue to release it from the deeper tissue. We then inject filler under each individual scar to smooth the skin and prevent the reformation of scar bands, smoothing the skin.
