Several skin concerns can arise as a result of pregnancy, attributable to the significant hormonal fluctuations experienced, namely changes in oestrogen, progesterone and androgen levels.

Symptoms of the fluctuation of progesterone and oestrogen levels during pregnancy often involve irritation and a weakened skin barrier, appearing as redness and reactivity on the surface of the skin. Alongside this, the fluctuation in oestrogen may reduce oil production and overall moisture retention, leading to dry and flaky patches of skin during pregnancy. Alternatively, an increase in androgen levels can stimulate the sebaceous glands in the skin, producing excess sebum and causing the formation of pregnancy acne.

The production of excess pigment is additionally a skin concern we see in some cases amongst pregnant and post-partum women, the increase of oestrogen and progesterone levels causing the stimulation of melanocytes, often in the third trimester. This occasionally manifests as particularly stubborn forms of pigmentation, such as melasma.
