An overproduction of the skin’s natural oils may lead to oily skin which can look shiny and also be accompanied by spots and large pores. Specific products and treatments can help to control oily skin however, and reduce the appearance of shine and grease.

What is Oily Skin?

Oily skin can look greasy, and there may be a noticeable shine to the face along with enlarged pores and blemishes and spots. Oily skin is caused by an excess of sebum, the natural oil secreted by the skin’s sebaceous glands, tiny glands found in our hair follicles.

Certain skincare products disrupt the skin’s natural balance, which can increase the amount of sebum produced. Plus, overscrubbing or overwashing skin can strip away the skin’s oils so the sebum glands may overcompensate for this and produce more sebum, leading to oily skin.
Other causes of oily skin include hormonal changes that occur during the mensutraul cycle as well as pregnancy and menopause. It’s thanks to a change in the balance of sex hormones including an increase in testosterone which can often lead to greater levels of sebum.
In fact, women are more susceptible to oily skin than men due to these hormonal fluctuations. Anyone who suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders which impact the production of oils, will also be more prone to oily skin.
