Do we REALLY need Beauty Sleep?

The short answer is - YES! But with so much for us all to juggle these days, it’s no wonder that in the UK the average adult sleeps at least an hour less than recommended. And though we’ve all heard that good sleep is important, the reasons behind it playing such a vital role in our health aren’t always clear.

We decided to sit down with Dr David Jack to get to the bottom of the importance of good sleep for overall skin health and wellbeing - and give you a few tips to make sure you’re getting that much-needed 8 hours.

Why Do We Need Beauty Sleep?

  1. Brain Function
  2. Weight Loss
  3. Recovery

1. BRAIN FUNCTION

waking up

Quite simply, sleep helps your brain work properly. Lack of sleep can result in poor decision making and lack of emotional control, as well as mood swings and lack of motivation.
So though you might feel you have too much to do to spend 8 hours asleep, it will in fact drastically improve your performance for those hours you are awake, giving you the better capacity to prioritise and stay focused.

2. WEIGHT LOSS

weight loss

Sleep deprivation has often been linked to obesity because while we sleep our bodies are busy balancing our hormones, specifically in this case ghrelin and leptin.
If you don’t get enough sleep, your ghrelin levels increase; this is the hormone responsible for making you feel hungry.  Leptin, on the other hand, helps you to feel full and maintain a healthy appetite - but without good sleep, leptin levels decrease.

3. RECOVERY

Sleep also supports healthy growth and development, so if you’re hitting the gym or pushing yourself at spin or Pilates, it’s so important to allow the body and muscles to recover.
If you want to get the most out of the effort you put into your workouts, you should also be putting the effort into the amount of sleep and recovery time you give yourself!

4.THE SKIN

the skin

Now, this is a big one! At night-time our skin cells enter a state of renewal called mitosis - your skin cells are essentially dividing and multiplying into what will become your fresh new skin. As you can imagine this is when your skin needs nutrients the most, and when your skin will get the MAXIMUM impact from your skincare products.

That is why retinol-based products like our Good Night! Active Night Cream is so perfect at night. Put simply, Retinol is a form of Vitamin A that works to stimulate blood flow to cells (blood which will carry essential nutrients to the cells) and boosts collagen production - the strength and scaffolding that holds us together.
